Pollen

Pollen

Pollen is so small that it can only be seen with the naked eye, and it is so light that it is scattered everywhere by the wind or by insects. Light airborne pollens cause allergies more than any other substance.

For example, grass and weed pollen are so light that air currents can carry them for miles.

On the other hand, the pollen of colorful flowers, such as roses, is heavier and is often carried to other places by insects.

And as a result, they cause less asthma attacks. The amount of pollen is higher in dry and windy areas. Rain and low air temperature usually reduce the amount of pollen.

How to avoid pollens

How to avoid pollens

Avoiding seasonal pollens is often very difficult. Practical suggestions in this regard are:

(a) Close bedroom windows during pollination seasons, and use ventilation if possible.

Because weeds pollinate in the early hours of the day, asthma symptoms are more likely to occur if the bedroom window is open at that time.

(b) Closing car windows while driving

Some practical suggestions

1- Decorative accessories and small and delicate objects that cause dust accumulation should be used as little as possible.

Wall decorations (such as pictures and handmade paintings) and fabric wallpaper also cause dust to accumulate.

Use washable curtains instead of shutters and thick curtains.

Bookshelves should not be placed in the bedroom

2- Bedroom closets should be completely organized and only seasonal clothes should be kept in it.

A minimum of furniture can be placed in the closets.

The contact of the clothes should be placed regularly in a certain place, so that dust is not generated from disturbing them.

Closet doors should be closed as much as possible.

3- Parquet and linoleum are preferred over carpet as flooring.

Regular cleaning of the floor (at least once a week) is recommended.

Most patients prefer to carpet their bedroom, but it should be known that it is more difficult to remove dust.

Handwoven rugs (especially washable rugs) retain less dust than carpets.

It is very important to constantly clean the room and use a vacuum cleaner.

4- Mattresses and spring beds must be completely covered.

When cleaning the room, under the bed should also be cleaned.

5- The cover of the pillows should not be of a type that causes the absorption of allergenic substances.

The pillow itself should be replaced after a year or two.

Synthetic polyester materials such as Dacron are the best choice for making pillows.

Feather pillows and silk fibers should not be used.

Sponge pillows can become one of the main sources of fungus growth, which is an allergen, if sweat penetrates into it.

6- Blankets, bedspreads and mattresses should be washable, it is better to wash sheets and bedspreads with hot water.

The bedspread should be spread over the bed during the day to prevent dust.

A bedspread should be placed on the blanket and pillow.

The bedspread should be removed from the bed at night.

You should never sleep on a bedspread.

The quilt should not be used as a bedspread.

7- A child with asthma can only take a toy that does not cause allergies and is washed regularly to bed.

8- The opening of the cooler and heating devices should be closed and covered, unless they have an anti-dust filter, a piece of clean and wet cloth can be placed in front of the opening of the heating device to prevent dust from entering the room. This fabric itself can act as a filter.

9- The bedroom should be thoroughly cleaned twice a week.

It is better for a person suffering from allergies to leave the cleaning work to someone else. But if there is no other option, a dust mask can be useful. Dusting should be done with a damp cloth to absorb the dust.

A person with asthma should not enter the bedroom for a few hours after cleaning, because it is likely that dust is scattered in the air during this time.

10- After doing these actions, the bedroom will be a suitable place for the child with allergies and he can study and play there, and when the child is not playing with his toys, they should be kept in another room.

11- Pets should never be allowed in the bedroom.

Bedroom doors should be kept closed during the day to keep pets out, as it takes weeks to remove pet hair from carpets and furniture.

These suggestions seem difficult to implement at first, and often patients are skeptical about the effectiveness of these measures. Certainly, reducing dust can reduce asthma symptoms and possibly reduce medication use.

The bedroom should be a safe place for a patient with asthma. The last tip is, after cleaning the bedroom, make sure that cigarette smoke does not enter there
